Ukraine Pierces Russian Border near Kursk
Putin Calls Attack a Major Provocation
Russia Says Major Battles Under Way
Russia reportedly deployed air and artillery forces on Wednesday, August 6, 2024, to counter a Ukrainian border incursion in Kursk Oblast.
Moscow claimed it was battling an unprecedented cross-border incursion from Ukrainian troops, a major offensive that left Moscow scrambling to respond.
According to Russian officials and independent sources, troops and armored fighting vehicles crossed into Russia's western Kursk region on Tuesday.
The move raised questions from military experts, as it marked the first time Ukrainian forces had crossed into Russian territory since the start of the conflict in 2022.
Russian President Vladimir Putin denounced the attack as a "major provocation" and vowed a strong response. Moscow reported that major battles were underway in the border region.
