Arizona Coyotes Arena Uncertainty Dates Back to 2021
Meruelo's Takeover and Arizona's Reluctance
The Arizona Coyotes' arena uncertainty has been an ongoing issue since 2021, when Alex Meruelo took over the team in 2019. Despite Meruelo's ownership, Arizona has not been able to secure a long-term arena deal, leading to speculation about the team's future.
Potential Relocation Options
Seven cities have been mentioned as potential options for a new Coyotes home, including Salt Lake City, Houston, Quebec City, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Milwaukee, and Portland. The Coyotes have played more than half of their 27 seasons under some form of uncertainty, including bankruptcy proceedings.
Mullett Arena as a Temporary Home
In 2022, the Coyotes moved to Mullett Arena, a 5,000-seat facility on the campus of ASU, as a temporary home. However, the arena's small capacity and lack of amenities have raised concerns about its long-term viability.
Move to Salt Lake City Official
On April 18, 2024, the Arizona Coyotes officially announced their relocation to Salt Lake City. The team was sold to Smith Entertainment Group, led by Ashley and Ryan Smith, who also own the Utah Jazz. The Coyotes will play in a new arena in Salt Lake City, which is expected to open in 2025.
